Somerset Coalition May – June 2016 Outcomes

Alcohol: Essay contest winners awarded at May Freeholders meeting. Incorporated perception questions on alcohol survey; surveys are now distributed at bi-monthly IDRC sessions. Purpose of these survey questions is to gather data about adult perception on underage drinking.

Prescription Drugs/Illicit Drugs: Met with Somerset County Prosecutor and RWJUH - Somerset about distributing START packets through ER Department.

Marijuana/Tobacco: Social norms poster created for RVCC showing that the vast majority of RVCC students don't use marijuana. Flyers clearly displaying RVCC tobacco policy (including vaping) were posted around campus.

CADCA National Youth Leadership Initiative (NYLI):Presented by CADCA for high school youth from Hunterdon and Somerset counties. 75 Somerset youth attended 2-day training. The purpose of this training was to engage youth, using the SPF model, and have them assess their community/school to identify local drugs/alcohol and where/when/how they are being abused. This event also helped to build capacity of the YC and to give youth a voice.

Youth Coalition (YC): Administered 50 Rx Drop Box surveys at Bernards Township Charter Day; a separate survey was made for underage teens. Five (5) of our YC members attended the NYLI; 28 teens signed up to join the YC after attending the NYLI. Members attended Montgomery fireworks event; 29 Rx Drop Box surveys were completed.

HOPE Club: Eight (8) RVCC (2 of whom are HOPE Club members) students attended 3-day NJ Peer Institute held at TCNJ and received peer leadership training. All passed the Certified Peer Educators exam and received their certificates.
